PlantCML Works to Protect Public Safety
During Dangerous Electrical Storm
Quebec Residents Dial 9-1-1, Receive
the Immediate Help They Need in Crisis
St. Georges, Quebec-
On
August 2, 2007, thousands of residents
throughout Canada’s Quebec Province, in more
than 200 cities, felt the dangerous effects
of a deadly electrical storm. Widespread
damage, downed power lines and numerous
storm-related injuries resulted in an influx
of calls to the area’s primary dispatch
operation, the Chaudière-Appalaches
Emergency Calls Centre (CAUCA).
Fortunately, the centre was prepared to
handle this increased call volume using
cutting edge 9-1-1 communications technology
provided by industry leader PlantCML.
In early
2006, CAUCA entered into an agreement
with PlantCML to become a beta center for
Sentinel® Patriot™,
the company’s latest, IP-enabled (Internet
Protocol) solution. Not only did the
systems’ unique IP architecture afford
CAUCA personnel the ability to handle
calls remotely and an open path for future
upgrades, but it also ensured fault-tolerant
redundancy in the event of a system failure.
CAUCA officials were immediately
impressed with Sentinel Patriot’s many
standard, robust features, including:
Automatic Call Distribution (ACD), embedded
instant messaging and system compatibility
and back-up communications capabilities.
“We were
seeking the most advanced IP solution on the
market. When we discovered Sentinel
Patriot, we knew it was the perfect answer,”
said Daniel Veilleux, CAUCA’s General
Manager. “Sentinel Patriot offers the
flexibility we desired and the reliability
we required. As we grow, the product can
grow with us and adapt to meet our needs.
From the onset, our experience working with
PlantCML has been tremendous.”
CAUCA’s
extensive use of Sentinel Patriot during the
August 2007 electrical storm proved the
technology’s ability to handle high call
volume in off-peak hours. For Veilleux, it
also demonstrated its capacity to serve
9-1-1 centres that serviced areas with much
larger populations. Today, CAUCA is
planning to implement the technology in its
second dispatch center, which is scheduled
to open in 2008. Here, CAUCA and
Sentinel Patriot will serve an additional
half million people, ensuring they too have
access to the most effective IP-enabled
response system available.
About
CAUCA
Founded in 1984, the
Chaudière-Appalaches Emergency Calls Centre

and ambulance center, to a population of one
million throughout
Canada’s Quebec Province.
CAUCA
was formed by a coalition of mayors from 15
cities in an effort to develop a
state-of-the-art dispatch center for the
